SimVis – A Portable Framework for Simulating Virtual Environments

نویسنده

  • Timothy Parsons
چکیده

We introduce a portable, generalizable, and accessible open-source framework (SimVis) for performing a large variety of Mixed Reality (MR) research. Using the framework, we conduct a user study whose results explore the differences between Brown’s CAVE and Brown’s YURT in performing insight-based tasks on volume data. The results of our user study (and future experiments using our framework) aim to help answer the question ‘is MR Simulation a valid alternative for experimentation?’

Collaborative education in a virtual learning environment

For the last few decades, there was tremendous interest in harnessing 3D virtual environments for education and training. Multi-user game-like environments make use of non-player characters and quest activities in tutoring and training. This approach incorporates successful active learning and incremental progress. This article presents issues encountered while adapting the multi-user online ga...

Simulating socially intelligent agents in semantic virtual environments

The simulation of synthetic humans inhabiting virtual environments is a current research topic with a great number of behavioral problems to be tackled. Semantical Virtual Environments (SVEs) have recently been proposed not only to ease world modelling but also to enhance agent-object and agent-agent interaction. Thus, we propose the use of ontologies to define the world’s knowledge base and to...

Framework for Virtual Cognitive Experiment in Virtual Geographic Environments

Virtual Geographic Environment Cognition is the attempt to understand the human cognition of surface features, geographic processes, and human behaviour, as well as their relationships in the real world. From the perspective of human cognition behaviour analysis and simulation, previous work in Virtual Geographic Environments (VGEs) has focused mostly on representing and simulating the real wor...

A review of methods for resource allocation and operational framework in cloud computing

The issue of management and allocation of resources in cloud computing environments, according to the breadth of scale and modern technology implementation, is a complicated issue. Issues such as: the heterogeneity of resources, resource dependencies to each other, the dynamics of the environment, virtualization, workload diversity as well as a wide range of management objectives of cloud servi...

SHARP: A System for Haptic Assembly and Realistic Prototyping

Virtual Reality (VR) technology holds promise as a virtual prototyping tool for mechanical assembly; however, several developmental challenges still need to be addressed before virtual prototyping applications can successfully be integrated into the product realization process. This paper describes the development of SHARP (System for Haptic Assembly & Realistic Prototyping), a portable VR inte...
